This is an interview with George Saunders. After reading “The Semplica-Girl Diaries” I really wanted to know more about Saunders. I thought his style of writing and his ability to create such a real character was amazing. This made me think he was the type to have always been a writer and that writing fiction or telling stories was his strong suit from day one. However, this interview reveals that his road to creative writing was not what I thought.
Saunders studied geophysics for his undergrad at the Colorado School of Mines. He was accepted into Syracuse University because of a strong connection and they said he was an experiment. I urge those of you who were also struck by his writing to take a look at this interview.
“But fiction is open to whoever comes in the door, as long as you come in energetically, and so I had a feeling there was room for me.” – George Saunders on his introduction to fiction writing.
